Estudio Parrado's "Loop": A Mirror of Innovation

Unveiling the Aesthetic and Structural Brilliance of the Award-Winning Design

Estudio Parrado, led by Lilian and Luisa Parrado, has always been guided by the principle of creating simple, clean designs that complement architecture and interior spaces. Their award-winning "Loop" mirror is a perfect embodiment of this ethos. The design, devoid of glue, screws, or welding, is a harmonious balance of three complementary pieces, reflecting a higher aesthetic level with a well-resolved composition.

The unique properties of the "Loop" mirror lie in its unusual structural system. The steel frame attaches to the concrete base only by a pin, joining all its parts into a single structure. This design not only guarantees a well-resolved and delicate look to the piece but also highlights the characteristics of the materials used.

The realization of the "Loop" mirror involved the use of CNC technology. The concrete base, the most complex piece to be developed, was first produced in machined MDF board to be used as a matrix for the polyurethane mold. The frame, a simple machined steel strip with two holes, fits into the concrete pin to hold the entire structure together. This interactive design enables the user to understand clearly how the product was made, creating a connection between them.

The project, which started in March 2017 and concluded in February 2018 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was not without its challenges. The whole mirror structure was challenging as three different materials with their own properties had to work together aesthetically and structurally. The concrete mold was the biggest challenge of the project, given its limitations for non-symmetrical and complex objects. However, after a sequence of many trials, the team achieved the best result.

The "Loop" mirror, measuring 500mm x 500mm x 70mm, is a testament to Estudio Parrado's commitment to rethinking materials, processes, and constructive methods. The design was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2018, a prestigious accolade rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
